Cthulhu worshipers is a game title full of horror intrigue, but if this is your first time encountering it, you might be surprised to learn that it’s neither a dark RPG nor a creepy narrative adventure game. In fact, it is a city builder and settlement manager. Not only does this place the genre into new and exciting territory, but it also adds some mechanics that I never thought I’d see playing a Cities Skylines or Anno competitor.
Getting to Know Worshippers of Cthulhu
Are you ready to lead a cult that’s all about the Great Old One? Worshippers of Cthulhu invites you to dive into a world full of creepy creatures and tricky choices. In this game, you’ll decide the fates of your followers, perform dark rituals, and build up a city while balancing on the edge of sanity.
In Cult of Cthulhu, you play as the overlord of a cult hoping to awaken Cthulhu from his slumber. All the typical elements of a city-building game are here – you need to acquire materials to construct buildings and expand your settlement, residents can be assigned jobs and trades, and you have to keep an eye on your resources. Of course, everything was covered in the horrible sauce.
However, there are some very interesting details beyond that. Throughout the game, you’ll encounter people who don’t believe in Cthulhu, and you can choose how to deal with them – whether you invest some time, resources, and possibly some threatening force into converting their beliefs, or do you Consider them disposable resources and make them expendable. The sacrifices and rituals you perform also have their own detailed mechanics and cutscenes, which is an incredible extra layer of detail.
For example, you can reassign a resident’s skills and professions by grabbing a ritual dagger and carving runes on their back. Yes, really. Small moments like this give you a break from the endless tasks, menus, and monitoring of buildings and residents.
Ritual also summons giant Lovecraftian monsters that you can tame to fight alongside you.
Leading Your Cult
As the head honcho of your cult, every choice matters. You get to guide your followers with intention: will you send them off to work, take over some land, or maybe even sacrifice them in a dark ritual? Routine stuff counts too. You’ll need to set rules, announce celebrations, and communicate with Cthulhu’s mysterious servants. Your main goal? Wake up your God and unleash some incredible power on the world.
Building Your Cult City
If you want to awaken the Old One, your cult needs to be strong and well-run. You’ll be tasked with building and expanding cities on different islands that help your followers connect to Cthulhu. Managing production, assigning workers, and picking your way through dangerous ruins are all a must. Every decision you make comes with potential rewards and hidden dangers.
Getting Into the Dark Rituals
Rituals are your ticket to gaining more knowledge and supernatural perks in the game. You’ll engage with legendary beings like Dagon and really soak in Lovecraft’s mythology through these ceremonies. Performing rituals gives you insights and powers that ramp up your influence while expanding your eerie city.
Taking Down the Non-Believers
Out there, you’ll find non-believers who have valuable resources and land. Just like in many Lovecraftian stories, your adventure happens in a bigger universe where you gotta make clever choices. You can decide to conquer, plunder, sacrifice, or win over those non-believers as loyal followers—whatever works best for you!
Diving Into the Lovecraftian World
Right from the start, you’ll get a taste of the big and spooky world around you. Figuring out how to navigate this space takes some time and exploring. With a story that’s deeply connected to Lovecraft’s gothic style, every choice and move you make is filled with that creepy vibe he’s known for.
The Story Behind Our Creation
Building Worshippers of Cthulhu has been a passion project for our indie dev team. After we got over 100,000 wishlists really quick, we’ve been super excited for our launch on October 21st. We were inspired by the challenge of turning horror literature into a game, starting off with a simple drawing of a hole—who knew that would kick off our cult-building journey?
Overcoming Research Hurdles
Doing research for this game felt a little like cracking open a cursed book, revealing tons of ideas and challenges. Some of our team weren’t huge fans of the Cthulhu Mythos at first, but once we really dove into the stories, we developed a big love for Lovecraft’s works. Copyright issues were a challenge too; we had to mix existing Cthulhu ideas with our own to make something special. This meant a lot of digging into folklore and cult histories, enriching our themes in the game.
Creating Fun New Mechanics
Designing gameplay that fits the Cthulhu Mythos was a thoughtful process. We wanted to capture that iconic cosmic horror feel while keeping the gameplay engaging. Our mechanics include:
- Rituals: We’ve crafted lots of rituals that bring both fear and excitement, pulling from history and our own imaginations.
- Role-Playing Choices: Players will feel the impact of their decisions in the game—will you choose cruelty or mercy?
- Monster Combat: Instead of traditional armies, you’ll summon terrifying monsters for battles that stick closely to Lovecraftian themes.
- Faith Points: We ditched regular currency in favor of faith points to control city-building, reminding players of how important their followers’ beliefs are for survival in the dark world.
Balancing Atmosphere and Fun
Finding the sweet spot between a creepy atmosphere and fun gameplay was so important. While we wanted to pull players into a mysterious and dark world, we also wanted to make it welcoming for newcomers. We sprinkled in tons of references to Lovecraft’s writings while ensuring that our gameplay mechanics would appeal to those still learning the lore.
Wrapping Up
As we gear up for the release of Worshippers of Cthulhu on October 21st, we hope this look into our creative journey inspires others to start their own unique projects.
